Knowledge and Sorrow

"And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow."

Ecclesiastes 1:17-18

Why would increasing one's knowledge also increase one's sorrow?

Ask and it shall be given - Part 2

"It's not just a passing idea.  I am serious!"

"Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."

Ask and it shall be given - Part 1

"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened."

"Why not just give us what we ask for?"

"Because, this way, you are absolutely certain that it is something you want, and not just a passing idea."

Definitions and Etymology

When reading old texts, such as our Masonic Ritual, make sure that you apply definitions from the correct time period, to the words that ar eused.

Otherwise you may get confused to their meaning.

For Example: Look up the etymology (or old definition) for the word "Dream."

This may better explain the meaning of Mozart's "Requiem for a Dream,"
or Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

Deliberate misuse of Grammar and Logic, will undoubtedly produce twisted Rhetoric.

Sir Francis Bacon - Of Great Place

"For honor is, or should be, the place of virtue; and as in nature things move violently to their place and calmly in their place, so virtue in ambition is violent, in authority settled and calm.

All rising to great place is by a winding stair; and if there be factions, it is good to side a man’s self whilst he is in the rising, and to balance himself when he is placed."

- Sir Francis Bacon
Of Great Place

Worshipful Gavel

worshipful (adj.)
Old English worðscip, wurðscip (Anglian), weorðscipe (West Saxon) "condition of being worthy, dignity, glory, distinction, honor, renown," from weorð "worthy" (see worth) + -scipe (see -ship).

The original sense is preserved in the title worshipful "honorable" (c. 1300).

No wonder we give this guy a gavel...

Checkered Floor

"Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word  'happy' would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness.

It is far better to take things as they come along with patience and equanimity."

Booker T. Washington - Atlanta Compromise

"There is no defense or security for any of us except in the highest intelligence and development of all. If anywhere there are efforts tending to curtail the fullest growth of the Negro, let these efforts be turned into stimulating, encouraging, and making him the most useful and intelligent citizen. Effort or means so invested will pay a thousand per cent interest. These efforts will be twice blessed—blessing him that gives and him that takes. There is no escape through law of man or God from the inevitable:

The laws of changeless justice bind
oppressor with oppressed;

And close as sin and suffering joined
we march to fate abreast..."

- Booker T. Washington
1895 Atlanta Compromise Speech

Jung - Psychic Development

"I began to understand that the goal of psychic development is the self
There is no linear evolution; there is only a circumambulation of the self.
Uniform development exists, at most, at the beginning; later, everything points toward the centre.
This insight gave me stability, and gradually my inner peace returned.”

Circumambulation One

If you are asked a question, such as:

"What is the purpose of circumambulation?"

And your answer is:

"To walk in a circle."

This is considered a "surface level" answer, and you need to dig deeper.

Judgment

"Judge not, that ye be not judged."
- Matthew 7:1

Unfortunately many people take this single verse to mean "you shouldn't judge others."

Fortunately, the second verse clarifies the first, as it reads:

"For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again."
- Matthew 7:2

Do we, as Masons, judge and measure our candidates to the same standards in which we were judged and measured?
